Hearing leads to Victory
Victory in Jesus, my Savior forever. He sought me and He bought me with His redeeming blood.
Remember that song?
Did you grow up singing only stanza 1 and 3 or all of the stanzas?
This is one of the few hymns I recall singing all 3 stanzas.
I woke up thinking about Victory in Jesus, my Savior forever. I kept singing this song to myself all day long so I decided to look up the lyrics to see if the words playing in my head matched the actual hymn.
As I read over the lyrics several times the phrase, ‘I heard’ jumped out at me.
I heard an old, old story,
I heard about His groaning,
I heard about His healing,
I heard about a mansion
And I heard about the streets of gold
- What is so important about hearing?
- How is hearing related to victory?
- How does hearing relate to hope?
The answer is found in Romans 10:17 which says ‘So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God’.
Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence for things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is a requirement for hope. If we don’t have faith in a good outcome we cannot have hope.
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and many well-meaning people suggest I try various remedies, go to their Doctor or take a certain supplement. I have been dealing with this for over a decade and have tried many potions, lotions, and cures. Now when someone suggests a remedy, a new diet or a new exercise to me I politely tell them thank you but no thanks.
Why do I say no?
Because I don’t have faith in the suggested remedy; therefore, I have no hope that implementing that solution into my life will yield any positive results. While I have great hope for healing, I have little hope in the latest trend.
Without faith we cannot have hope.
F – Following
A – And
I – Inclined
T – To
H – Hear
If faith comes by hearing, then hearing is very important to us on our journey to find hope.
How do we hear?
The last part of Romans 10:17 says hearing comes by the word of God. If you want to hear Him then spend time with Him, read His Word and listen to that still, small voice of the Holy Spirit.
I want to hear Him, have faith in Him, place my hope in Him and celebrate victory in Him.

If you have not yet begun your personal relationship with God, understand that the One who created you loves you no matter who you are or what you’ve done.
You can tell Him in your own words or use this simple prayer:
Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive my sins and save me from eternal separation from God. By faith, I accept Your work and death on the cross as sufficient payment for my sins. Thank You for providing the way for me to know You and to have a relationship with my Heavenly Father. Through faith in You, I have eternal life. Jesus, I want YOU as Lord of my life! Thank You also for hearing my prayers and loving me unconditionally.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Jesus Christ provides a relationship with the Father and eternal life through His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead (Romans. 5:10).
